It`s a sad fact, but food is not just food anymore. Over the past 50 years the use of food additives has skyrocketed to the point where very few of us have any real idea exactly what`s in the food we eat. Alarmingly, the rates of diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, autism, depression, asthma and ADHD have also increased dramatically over this time. Every year, Australians consume over 5kg of food additives each, yet how many of us really know what these chemicals do, which ones are safe and which ones are known to
be
harmful?

Thankfully, not all food additives are harmful. In fact, of the 300 or so additives approved for use in Australia, most of them are safe, well tested and pose no problem for most people. However, there are at least 60 food additives used in our foods which are at best questionable in terms of safety, or at worse, known to be harmful.

Our Mission at Additive Alert is to provide you with the information you need to make an informed choice about what you feed yourself and your family today, as well as to lobby for changes to ensure we all have better choices tomorrow.

Chemical Food Additives are slowly
harming our children.

New findings every parent needs to know.
This is why we need to be careful, and read labels, before eating.
We all know how difficult it can be to make healthier food choices,
especially when reading food labels.

Alarming Facts you need to know-
  1. Chemical additives in food dont always appear to be a problem immediately after ingestion.
  2. the effects can be cumulative, a gradual build up in the body produces roller-coaster days,
    some good, some bad days.
  3. Some children are more sensitive than others - particularly to artifical "colöurs"
  4. Most chemcial additives are tested in isolation, which means by them selves.
  5. Most foods with these additives have more than one !

In March 2006, the Soil association and organix brands presented the results ot a 3 year study, on the effects of combining four common food additives.  The results propose that the tested combinations of the following common food additives can have a neurotoxic effect !;

E-133-Brillliant Blue with E621- monosodium glutamate (MSG), E104-Quinoline Yellow and E951 L aspartyl-Llphenylalanine methyl ester.

The mixture of the additives had a more potent effeect on nerve cells that each additive on its own.

The effect on cells was up to four times greater when brilliant blue and MSG were combined, and seven time greater when Quinoline Yellow and Aspartame were combined.

The study showed that when nerve cells were exposed to msg and brilliant blue or aspartame and yellow the additives stopped the nerve cells from normal growth and interferred with proper signalling systems.

As parents/teachers, every effort should be made to identify toxcities that could potentially harm our children and we need to put a stop to the horrible amount of toxic additives going into their tiny bodies
